We buried our dear Papa yesterday. He was hit by shrapnel from an exploding mortar and bled to death in the street with none of his family present to hold him in his last minutes. Although John and Jeanne are opposed to it, I am determined to seek out the men of the Charleston Fire Brigade and get the entire story from the mouths of those who tried to comfort Papa as he lay dying.

We did our best to honor our beloved Papa. With most our able-bodied men away at war, it was a small funeral. Pastor Paul gave an inspiring homily and a moving graveside prayer at First Scots, followed by our home reception. We served the last of our real coffee, with chicory added to stretch it so everyone could have a second cup. Jeanne and I begged and borrowed enough sugar to make a real cake in honor of Papa’s sweet tooth.

By the grace of God, Emily docked at Addison’s wharf the day before the service. It was a ray of light in a sorrowful event that Robert and Captain Burke could attend the funeral. Papa would have loved the men telling stories in his library with healthy drams of his horded whiskey.

After the reception, Emily slipped out of Charleston Harbor in the wee hours of the morning. Jeanne and I admire Robert for sacrificing his life in Glasgow to supply South Carolina in our time of need. The war has turned all our lives on end. Robert was always the scientist, the most studious of us children. While James and his friends rode fast horses and pulled pranks, Robert built sailing models to test at the mill pond on the Ashley River. Tonight, I will be on my knees praying God watches over my dear brother’s passage back to Nassau.
